Happiness was the greatest torture of all because it could all be taken away—and it was so much worse than if you’d never experienced it at all.
“I’ll have a word with him about making noise when he walks.”
Everything about her twisted my insides. Too beautiful. Too bright. Too kind. She even took in damn dogs.
“There’s no greater gift than peace.”
His words were simple, but they carried weight. Because they were spoken by a man who clearly hadn’t found it yet—not for any length of time anyway.
I crossed to her on instinct. Not a damned thing could’ve kept me away.
“But good can come, even out of those darkest depths. It doesn’t mean we’re glad we went through it. It just means we won’t let it change us for the worse.”
“Because I’m holding on to my last shred of humanity, and if you stand here in those goddamn shorts for another ten seconds, it’s going to snap.”
“I fuck you so hard you’ll feel me for weeks. I’ll ruin you, Reckless. You think I can’t taint you with my pain and the darkness that lives inside me, but you’re wrong.”

“Eyes on me.”
“Want to see everything when you shatter. Don’t want to miss a fucking thing.”
“You matter, Anson. You’re a good man.”
“Sleep, Reckless. I’ll keep the demons away.”
“Been dying for this. Now, grab the headboard and ride my face.”
Because the moments I was with Rho, when I heard her laugh, drowned in the feel of her, they were the only times since Greta died when I felt true peace.

That voice, something about it so achingly familiar but not exact.
“And you needed to pay. To be punished,” he snarled. “I thought the flames would get you, too. Take you down so I could finally be free of your lies. But you made it out.”
Every woman that reminded me of you. Every bitch who lied with her kind eyes. I made them scream before I slit their throats. The sweetest sound.”
“I don’t regret loving you for a single second. Scared the hell out of me, but it brought me back to life.”
“Home is wherever you are,” he whispered. “You’re my sanctuary. Where I feel peace. Where I feel seen. Don’t want anything more.”
The End is only a chance for another beginning.
“You gave me air when I thought I’d never breathe again. You gave me color when my world had gone black. You see every part of me. I don’t want to spend another moment without you. Marry me.”
