Matti had never lifted a finger in a violent pastime in his life. But right now, experiencing the unusual palm-tingling urge to get his hands around another person’s throat and squeeze, he quite fancied the idea of picking up a weapon.
“Indeed,” said Sofia grimly. “Believe me, there’s nothing romantic about someone who hears the word no and translates it through three books of love poems and his own daydreams so that it means please keep chasing me.”
But this was Matti’s time and he was going to do nothing, nothing, he was allowed. The pleasure of that was almost as sharp and shameful as the pleasure of enforcing idleness in someone as restless as Luca. And it wasn’t a complete waste. Matti knew it; Luca knew it. Something was being brought into balance.

Matti was so likeable. You could cut him in half like fresh bread and he’d be warm all the way through.
That was enough for Luca. He had been wanting for weeks, and now the desire was large enough and unbearable enough that he couldn’t find it within himself to do anything but take, as he took most things that he wanted, in the end.
And Matti was benefiting. Here was Luca Piere, gorgeous and dishevelled and fresh from Matti’s bed, his lip reddened with Matti’s kisses. There was no reason for Matti to feel aching and hollow, as though hearing a mourning song being rehearsed in another room.
“Fuck.” Luca could have stabbed himself in the hand, because he sounded exactly like what he was: a man about to burst into unattractive tears.

He was tensed for it, but the first blow—blunt and fast, to the side of his ribs—still came as a shock. The ones after that were less shocking, but they hurt just as much.
Noooooo don’t hurt him he’s just a little guy!! And it’s his birthday!! You wouldn’t hit a little birthday boy on his birthday!!!!!!

“Thank you for coming,” said Matti, who had never learned to enjoy being disarmed unless it was— Well. Unless.
“What I want?” Matti sounded hesitant, as bewildered as ever at the idea that what he wanted might be important. It was heartbreaking.
There was a solidity to Sofia’s stance that Luca admired, as though nothing could have possibly thrown her off-balance. She deserved far better than to be someone’s duty, and she clearly knew it.
“Come on, Mayanesh,” said Luca. “How long have you been in love with your brother’s betrothed?”

Luca had barely thrown his last sock aside when Matti caught his arm and drew him close.

“Does anybody,” said the Deputy Guildmaster, in a tone of faint desperation, “wish to challenge against this marriage?”

“Really?” Luca’s hand slid around Matti’s neck. People were probably staring at them. Nothing could have made Matti care. Luca said, “Kiss me.” And Matti did.
