A free person sees the world in color, as through a kaleidoscope. There is no one right answer but countless combinations, which we learn to imagine and make. Believers in an ideology have only black and white, others and themselves, a single truth. A value left alone perverts itself and opens a void. This happens in politics, as well as in our minds and bodies. Holding on to just one value, we never practice and never attain grace. If we believe in only one good thing, then every choice seems easy—for a time. What happens, though, when we cease to believe? Then we have nothing to fall back
