To all the black girls who grew up in the era of love triangles and cheesy rom-coms and never got to see themselves. This one’s for you.
Love is such a made-up delusion.
Abbie’s brash, but you never have to wonder what she thinks of you. I liked her honesty. Isn’t that some shit?
“She wanted you to know.”
I can handle him leaving and maybe that says something about where we were in our relationship, but it’s the disrespect that eats at me.
He grabs something from the drawer and offers it to me. “I thought you might want this. You forgot it when you moved out.” It’s one of my old silk scarves. “Thank you.” Setting my hair free from its hair tie, I sigh in relief as I massage my scalp with the pads of my fingers.
The text accompanies a photo of what I assume is my stuff in multiple garbage bags sitting on the porch. Motherfucker.
“Unless you want to borrow mine. My stuff looks good on you.”
“You’re the easiest person to love.
“Javi wouldn’t beg.” “If he had half a brain, he would.”
You threw my gaming equipment off the balcony? “Ryan, you threw his gaming stuff over the balcony?” I slap her shoulder and she laughs even harder. “I can neither confirm nor deny those details,
“Go on beautiful.” The man says, still leaning against the table, eyes locked on my lips. I ignore how the look he’s giving me makes me feel, all tingly and self-conscious. He’s clearly overdosing on confidence, and I can’t tell if I like it or not.
but I’ll never let a man make me feel insecure about what I do with my body.
“I’m ready for whatever comes next. If it’s love, then I’m open to it.” It won't be, but if that answer sells them, then fine.
I’ll be the bad guy if they want me too, but they can hate me while I collect that check.
“I’m not opposed to a beautiful woman making me breakfast.”
“It’s okay, hormones suck. Ryan warned me. You’re not horrible looking and I’ve been stuck in the house with you all summer. It’s you now. It’ll be someone new tomorrow.”
“We can do that on opposite sides of the room.” I mumble and fiddle with the hair tie around my wrist. “Am I making you uncomfortable?” He whispers and his breath tickles my ear, sending a tingle down my spine. Handsome men are the worst, especially when they know it.
“It’s not a date.” River doesn’t hesitate to correct her, and his tone is harsh. Didn’t know the idea repulsed him so much. It
River’s always been a bit of a workaholic, so I never questioned it. He never really partied or had close friends after high school. He’s dated plenty of women, but they all leave after realizing he has no time to give them.
“Eat like that on the show and I won’t have to worry about you.” “Are you worried?” Leaning in, I bat my lashes at him. I expect him to push me away, to laugh or make a joke. River does none of those things.
I scoot further away. “This is a king-sized bed. Why are you so close?” “I like to spread out. Why are you running from me?” He reaches his arm around my waist and pulls me against his chest, resting his head against the back of my neck.
Slapping a smile on my face, I push my breasts forward and run my fingers through my braids. At the sound of my approach, he turns. His dark eyes light up with recognition, his mouth sliding into a cocky grin. My mind goes blank, and I stumble to a halt. “You gotta be fucking kidding me.”
“I’m happy to know Kade has taste.”
His curls fall over his eyes, but they don’t hide the smile he gives her in return. Biting the inside of my cheek, I turn away.
Focus. The money makes this worth it. Every week my bank account gets fatter and now’s my chance to show off some skill.
“Your makeup is beautiful. You’re definitely talented.” Kade mumbles. “How’d you know I did it?” “You stand out.”
He slides his hands into my front pockets and pulls himself closer. “Just like that.” He whispers into my ear, and I feel my face warm. “I’m going to let you go now, okay?” When I turn to look at him, he’s not smiling. He looks genuinely concerned.
Kade’s charming, better at this than I thought. Shaking my head, I remind myself that he probably spits the same lines on all his dates.
“Keep yourself busy then. Sabrina seems to hold your attention.”
“Not touching you.” He murmurs, “Even though I’d much rather be doing just that.”
Joy looks good on him.
“One last thing. Make sure you don’t fall for me.” I snort, “I should be telling you that.”
what if he wants me in this moment because he isn’t supposed to have me? He claims he wanted me when I was with Javi, but he said nothing after we broke up. Now he wants me because Kade looks my way.
“I’m not. You’re just exceptionally bad.
“Did you want to watch one?” His tone is casual, but it feels like more.
“Uh, well, we’re not, you know…” I stumble over my words and mentally kick myself for it. “I’m working on it.” River leans forward on his elbow, his eyes firmly focused on me, daring me to contradict him.
We all know why Kade keeps you around.” She turns her anger on me. Every rational thought goes out the window and I pull my arm back. Just as I am about to put all my weight into wiping that look off her face, I feel a hand wrap around my fist.
When he begins to yawn and joke about us sharing his bed, I know it’s time to go.
“The next time he kisses you, remember how badly your body craves mine.”
“I’m not a good person.” My voice cracks. “Is that all?” He asks. I let my eyes focus on him and the corner of his mouth tilts up. “Good girls are overrated love; I wouldn’t know what to do with one.”
