The wind whipped the tears out of her eyes and left them somewhere behind, along with her name.

“Bones, you don’t have to hide the soft parts of you. Not from me,” he murmured. “No matter what’s goin’ on between us, I will never use them to hurt you.”

“Listen. You’re part of my crew, my family. We take care of each other.” “I know—” “I’m not gonna let anybody hurt you again.” His voice was raspy and I couldn’t tell if it was from emotion or the fever. His intense eyes held mine. I wanted to tell him to not say shit like that, to not make promises he couldn’t keep, but instead, I just forced a slight smile. “I know. I believe you.”

“I’m here ’cause those couple times you let me in before you got scared and pushed me away, I saw how much you cared. Then I watched you build those walls back up because you were afraid. And I don’t know if you’re afraid that I’ll hurt you or that you’ll hurt me, but I will give it my all showin’ you that you can trust me.”

Trey had just seemed so different, like he was somehow exempt from the awful reality I’d seen, like he couldn’t end up dead like everyone else because he was so full of life. There couldn’t be a time after Trey just like there couldn’t be a time after the sun. Yet here I found myself, lost in that after with no idea how to keep going.
