“Don’t you make that sound at me. He left first. And besides, I barely even know him. He’s just some man I met on the road,” I said. “There’s nothing special about that. I meet lots of people all the time.”
I grinned. Ragnar smiled back. And everything within me relaxed. It reminded me of that night we’d shared beneath the stars, the way I’d felt around him before we’d turned on each other. It all seemed silly now. All that bickering, and for what? It was just ale.
Nilsa dug her fingers into my arm and dragged me over to the counter, where a candle flickered brightly in the dragon display I’d brought her.
And I wondered what that felt like, to have someone—or a lot of someones—that happy to see you.
I looked at him, and he looked at me, and suddenly, the world seemed to make sense for once. This man. I felt like I’d been looking for him my whole life, and I’d never realized it until now. I didn’t want to be alone anymore. Not when there was someone like him.
“I’d spend forever wandering the world with you,”
