The endless hours on the road soothed my soul, whittling away the splinters that gathered along my edges anytime I spent too much time surrounded by other people.
I never let myself forget that every hello came with a goodbye.
“This is why you didn’t want me to come into the woods,” said Ragnar. “You never touched my kegs.” “Yeah. Does that disappoint you?” He gazed up at my dragon’s powerful form. When he spoke, his voice was full of awe. “I’ve never been happier to be so incredibly wrong.” And finally, I smiled.
“He’s got you, Lilia,” said Ragnar. “And from where I’m sitting, he’s damn lucky he does.”
“If you believe a few barrels of beer are more important than the deep, life-altering connection between two lonely souls, then I’m afraid you’re more hopeless than a hound without a bone.”
And I wondered what that felt like, to have someone—or a lot of someones—that happy to see you.
He strode purposely beside me with his arms relaxed by his sides, like this was nothing more than a simple conversation. But it didn’t feel so simple, not to me. It felt like the start of something bigger—like the slightest of cracks had spiderwebbed through my protective walls.
Silence was sometimes the best comfort one could give.
“Lilia.” I reached out and tucked a wayward strand of silver hair behind her ear, my fingers gently brushing her skin. She shivered and looked back at me. The flush had crept down her neck. “Come here.” Her eyes darted back and forth between mine. “I am here.” “Come closer, so I can kiss you.”
I looked at him, and he looked at me, and suddenly, the world seemed to make sense for once. This man. I felt like I’d been looking for him my whole life, and I’d never realized it until now.
“Fuck, Lilia.” He palmed the wood on either side of my head. “I want to do unspeakable things to you.” My breath caught. “You say that like it’s a bad thing.”
His touch was like a balm that I’d never known I needed. And I finally felt peace.
You are going to be the end of me. And I would gladly face oblivion to have her look at me just like this.
“Here’s to adventure and endless horizons.” “And every night spent with you.”
“Then we’ll wander as long as you want.” He brushed his lips against mine. “The only home I’ll ever need is you.”
