“Brother. You’re in Maine now. Best learn to slow down a bit or you won’t survive.”
Once this was done, I would go back to Boston, but not before I asked her out. She was too beautiful and intriguing to pass up. And damn if she wasn’t a bright spot in this shitty town. She was gorgeous and kind and intelligent, which meant there was no way I’d escape the next couple of weeks without developing a full-blown crush.
Because there was no denying it. I was now lusting after my little brother’s ex-girlfriend.
All the while, he stole questioning glances at me, but I remained silent. I enjoyed throwing him off balance a little. It was kind of hot actually, cracking the cool, calm exterior of the tall, broody businessman. I had the feeling he wasn’t the kind of guy who was frequently caught off guard.
I squeezed my eyes shut and tried to ignore the pull I felt toward her. She was an employee, temporary or not, and my little brother’s ex-girlfriend. Not to mention a decade younger than me. Yet none of those pesky details mattered when she smiled at me. And when she did, it was like standing in the sun. Her attention was warm and comforting, and it created an ache inside me, one I’d never felt before and couldn’t identify.
Because it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world if I got to keep her.
I wanted to know what she was thinking. Or, more importantly, what she was feeling. Because I was feeling all the things.
But this time, I’d gone too far, and there was no going back. I was in love with Lila Webster.
“You can have whatever you want. I’m all yours. For tonight, this year, or forever. I’m here if you want me.”
“I’m sorry I’m in a mood. But you don’t have to do that.” Frowning, he gestured at my face. “That’s the smile you give nasty customers at the diner.” He stepped in closer and tipped my chin up. “I only want your real smiles, Lila. If you’re mad at me, tell me. Yell at me. I’ll do better. But don’t pretend everything is fine. Trust your feelings.”
