“Are you one of those black coffee guys?” she asked, narrowing her eyes. “The kind that pretends to be so tough that milk and sugar are a threat to your manhood?”
Because there was no denying it. I was now lusting after my little brother’s ex-girlfriend.
It was kind of hot actually, cracking the cool, calm exterior of the tall, broody businessman. I had the feeling he wasn’t the kind of guy who was frequently caught off guard.
Talking turned into flirting so naturally, and I found myself addicted to watching him respond to me.
Damn, I’d never been so attracted to a woman in my life. Lila could completely destroy me. And I would gladly let her.
There were millions of reasons not to get involved with Lila, but when I put my arm around her as we stepped out into the parking lot, none of them mattered. Being with Lila made me feel brave. I had to at least try.
“The last thing I need is to face the firing squad in town when it gets out that I’ve hooked up with my ex’s older brother.” Hooked up? The words hit me like a punch to the gut. Here I was, mooning over her, feeling like I’d found the one, and, to her, I was nothing more than a casual hookup. “My brother got you for eight years,” I spat, the anger inside me bubbling up. “And I only get a weekend?”
“Because I don’t want you to be cold. Or hungry or tired. I care about you. And if I can make your life easier, even in the smallest of ways, then I’ll do it. Every time.”
And although Owen couldn’t be a forever option, he felt so right for today. And why deny myself happiness and connection and affection today, when tomorrow wasn’t guaranteed?
“You can have whatever you want. I’m all yours. For tonight, this year, or forever. I’m here if you want me.”
“You’re so perfect. Like you were made for me.” “What if I was?” She gasped. “Made for you?”
We can’t control the future, but we can control how we show up for one another.
