I chuckled at the thought of my dad hiring an expensive interior designer out of Portland or Bangor and telling them he wanted something that screamed “swanky law firm in hell.”
Did I wear a little makeup and my tightest jeans? Why, yes, I did. And No, I did not want to analyze why.
I spun, finding him staring, slack-jawed, at my minivan. I smiled and threw one arm out, gesturing to it like I was a game show hostess and the van was a coveted prize. “This baby is a 2002 Chrysler Town & Country. Don’t be intimidated by her grandeur. Priscilla’s just a car.”
“You’re not running drugs, are you?” I tilted my head and stuck my tongue out at him. “If I was a drug dealer, I’d probably have a much nicer car.”
He took a multi-tool out of his back pocket—hot—and
She may need ice cream, or a foot rub, or a carburetor to take apart.”
he’d probably noticed me staring like a sex-starved weirdo. To be fair, I absolutely was. But he didn’t need to know that.
“He was either a brilliant visionary or a total crackpot.
“You want a plane?” Enzo asked. “So that’s how it is now? You start rolling with literal billionaires and we’ve got planes?”
I didn’t pack any gala-appropriate clothing.” I did not own any gala-appropriate clothing, so that was a nonstarter. Not that I’d admit that out loud. Enzo waved a hand. “That’s no problem. I live with four women and a couple of billionaires.”
Enzo held up a finger and stared at his phone, as if waiting for a response. Then he nodded so vigorously I worried he’d give himself a headache. “We’ve got a guy,” he said, still texting. “At Saks. Gabriel.”
“So that’s what you want? For me to make you mine?”
I’d personally take down every tree in town just to keep watching the Owen Hebert Lumberjack Spectacular. Screw raffles. The town should use him to fundraise for the new library. If we streamed this on YouTube, this town would never want for anything again.
I don’t want you to be cold. Or hungry or tired. I care about you. And if I can make your life easier, even in the smallest of ways, then I’ll do it. Every time.”
Ooh, I have an idea.” She perked up and flagged Jim, the curmudgeonly owner of the Moose, down. “Jim, would you be opposed to going to mixology school? I’ll pay. That way we can elevate the cocktail game in this place.”
“How about this? Take my house. Live there. Do whatever you want.” “I couldn’t. What if you need it?” “Given that it’s a seven-bedroom lakefront mansion, I’m pretty sure there’s room for me to visit.” She picked up another waffle fry and dipped it in ketchup. “It rarely gets used. After all the money I spent on the damn roof last year, someone should live there and benefit from it.”
You, Magnolia Stephens-Thomas, are going to give up planning events in the Big Apple to become a backwoods innkeeper?” Magnolia threw a balled-up napkin at her. “Gross, no. You make it sound so sad. I won’t be the one running it.
“Ooh.” Magnolia bounced in her seat and rubbed her hands together. “The lumberjack brigade has arrived. We’ve got Scruffy Lumberjack, Corporate Lumberjack, Man Bun Lumberjack, and, ooh, my personal favorite, Sensitive Musician Lumberjack.
Self-doubt gives you wrinkles.
“Maybe I’ll just go say hi,” I said, sliding out of the booth. “Keep your hands to yourself and your tongue in your mouth.”
“I’ve been spending a lot of time with the boys out in the woods. I’m embracing my inner lumberjack.” I’d ordered a dozen online last week after she’d made an offhand comment about how I’d look hot in one, but she didn’t need to know that.
I’d love to pull out all the stops, and I would, if I thought it would impress her. At this point, I was so desperate to take her on an actual date that even the Wendy’s in Heartsborough was looking pretty good right now,
Owen gave the best hugs. He used his whole body and didn’t hesitate to squeeze when necessary.
She seemed to think she could keep me away from Owen, but the joke was on her. Security would have to tase me to get me out, and then I’d climb in a window if I had to.
His eyes were dancing as he kissed the top of her head, like he was totally delighted by the way she was yelling at him in the hospital waiting room.
“You know where to find us. Just follow the sounds of Adele threatening my life.”
“Despite your rich and famous friends, you do not have helicopter money.
do you really want to move into student housing?” I most certainly did not want to move into student housing, but that was beside the point.
