Everyone was guilty of trying to survive.
After the Twin Towers fell on 9/11, Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh said we lost an opportunity for global compassion. The key question we should have asked our neighbors, he added, is “How can I make you feel safe?” It seems to me as human beings, we should be capable of imagining beyond fences and cages.
Writing my immigrant story was an act of rebellion. It was a way of pushing back against a society that forces its immigrants—especially immigrants of color—to hide or deny who they are.
But above all, I want all immigrants to be treated with respect and with the dignity they deserve. Maybe one day, we as a country can finally be proud to claim that our superpower is our immigrant community.
