wrapped a hand around my mouth and dragged me off my feet. I wanted to scream, wanted to fight, but the angel’s impossible strength kept me pinned to his body as I thrashed under his grip. He pulled us into an alleyway, deep into the shadows of darkness. “Shhhh,” he hummed into my ear.
“I don’t want to watch you get hurt because I don’t like it. Fair enough?”
“I mean, he was about to kill Ryder just for touching you.
“Of course I was watching you. I couldn’t look away for a moment, even if I tried.”
“I should have ended him a long time ago for laying a hand on you.”
Wolf’s thumb brushed my cheekbone once. It was a promise.
“You’re a fucking goddess.”
“You do not know the violence that runs through my veins, begging to obliterate anyone who lays a hand on you.”
“Anything for my deadly huntress.”
“Will you stay with me?”
“I’ll always stay with you.”
“My heart bows to you and you only, Huntress.”
“My heart is yours, you bastard! You can’t leave me!”
Love. Was that what the flip of my stomach was every time he entered a room? Was that the warmth I felt when he unlaced my boots for me, the pull in my heart when he tended to my wounds? How quickly he could piss me off, how rapidly I forgave him, even though I pretended to stay angry? Was that love?
