In Nikki’s experience, some people didn’t change as they aged. They just became more so.

“Sometimes I look at these interns we have from fancy schools, well-connected families. They were born on third base but think they’ve earned what they have because they’re smart. I’m smart, too, but when you come from the place we came from, smart isn’t enough. Not by a long shot.”
