I’m starting to think the answer is a resounding no. Worse, I have no idea what to feel about the fact that I’m the reason he’s in a tough situation with his father and lost a project I’ve often heard him discuss with Leo. I’d like to think it’s not my fault that he walked out due to a stupid reason like my attempt to provoke him, but it still nags at me.
He’s not thinking about it, is he? I’d cut off his dick while he sleeps if he so much as— In a flash, Eli snatches the knife and jams it through the back of Robert’s hand. The blinding strength breaks the dish and Robert’s blood mixes with the meat’s as his hollowing scream fills the restaurant. All eyes are on us and a few waiters rush over to the scene. Janet shrieks as she jumps up, and then falls back to her seat. Eli stands with eerie collectiveness and buttons his jacket. “You’re lucky we’re in public or that knife would’ve been deep in your throat. Look at my wife again and I’ll gouge

“What…what have you done, Eli?” “The question is, what haven’t I done?” “You’re sick.” “You made me sick. Next time you parade yourself around, begging for attention, I want you to think about Robert’s blood and multiply it tenfold, because they’ll be swimming in theirs once I’m done with them. You’re my wife and those who don’t respect that fact will be dealt with accordingly.” “Including me?” “Including you.”
My husband is a full-blown sociopath, and I’m his insane, completely illogical obsession.
“You won’t object?” “About?” “Me calling him Leo.” “Do you want me to object?” “Nope.” She smiles and kisses my cheek. “You can be so adorable when you’re compliant, babe.” And then she slides into the back seat. I remain rooted in place, resisting the urge to touch where her lips burned my skin. Did she just call me adorable and babe in the same sentence after kissing my cheek? Jesus fucking Christ.
“For the record,” Henderson says as I step out of the car. “She was stressed about the fact that she’s the reason you got kicked out of the project twice and has been brainstorming ways to help. Do you believe it was easy for her to go to your father and out herself as the reason? Do you believe a proud person like her wants to be seen as your weakness by your parents?” My jaw clenches. “You’re talking too much today. Is this your two weeks’ notice?” “No, it’s my humanity notice,” he says with a blank face before he turns around and leaves.
“Selfish?” I let out fake laughter. “Honey, I’m wearing his ring, so that gives me every right to be selfish over my belongings. You, however, need to remove yourself from this party and subsequently my life. I cut contact and didn’t invite you for a reason. Read between the lines, please. Oh, and Eli doesn’t even know your first name. He only recalls the last because he does business with your family. Sorry to break it to you, but you’re not that important.”
“Let me ask one thing.” “Yes?” “Will I ever be normal enough to have children?” She remains silent and that’s all the answer I need. If I have children, I can’t raise them or I’ll most likely be a threat to them. Better yet, I shouldn’t have them for everyone’s sake. And that will leave the heir of King Enterprises heirless. Because of me. I came to Dr. Blaine to seek answers, but I leave with a heavy heart and tears burning my eyes.
“Dear Eli.” He speaks in a nonchalant voice. “You’re probably wondering why I’m writing you this letter, but I had to put these feelings on paper and hope they’ll somehow reach you. You see, I’ve had a major crush on you for years, but you always treated me like a kid who’s not worth your time.
“You seem to believe you have a choice, but you don’t. Either you stay still and go through with the wedding, or you leave. If you choose the second option, I’ll find you and I’ll kidnap you to a place no one can find you. I’ll lock you the fuck up and you’ll never see your parents or friends ever again. And if you prove to be a hassle, I’ll slice your fucking throat and end your life as effortlessly as I did Oliver’s.”
“If you don’t do as promised, I’ll find a way to commit suicide. Whether by throwing myself off a bridge, a building, or in front of a train. I will swallow a bottle of pills or slice my wrists or even hang myself. I will do everything to take myself from your vicinity if you don’t give me back my freedom. I promise I will! I promise I will!” Her words have no different effect than if she’d stabbed me again. No. They’re much worse.
So I promised Cole to send him the signed divorce and guardianship agreements first thing in the morning. Sam packed my wife’s suitcases and Henderson helped load them into the van as I stood by my study’s window watching my wife—soon-to-be-ex-wife—being carried, unconscious, in her father’s arms before she was driven away from me for good. She signed the divorce papers with her father’s guardianship the following day.
“You’re anything but fine.” Dad sits on my other side. “No need to pretend you’re doing okay after Cole got his wish.” “It’s her wish, too.” The words are exceptionally hard to spit out. “She wanted the divorce enough to put her life on the line for it.” Mum continues caressing my back softly. “I’m so sorry. No one deserves to go through that.” “I do. I lied to her, knowing full well the consequences wouldn’t be pretty once she found out. And I was proven right, yet again.”
“My watch. The one that you’re wearing,” I blurt. “I bought it, not Aunt Elsa, and now, I don’t want you to wear it anymore. Give it back!” He glances back at me, his voice deep, smooth, and cryptic. “No.” “I told you I’m the one who had it made.” “I know. Mum mentioned that a couple of years ago. It’s mine now and I don’t give away what’s mine.” “I thought I was yours, too, at some point, but you had no issue giving up on me.”
“I’ll always be there.” He strokes my cheek, my nose, the corner of my mouth, wiping all my tears with eyes so soft and loving, I want to drown in them. “Even if I get worse?” “Especially if you get worse.” “Even if I don’t want you?” “Even then. Though you wanted me since you were a kid. I doubt that will ever change.”
“The phoenix is you.” He kisses my throat, sucking on my pulse, and I arch, giving him further access. “M-me?” “You’re a beautiful mythical being who can be born from the ashes of your illness.” “And the tree of life?” My words end on a moan as he keeps sucking and devouring my throat. “That’s me. I believed I could contain your rebirth, every time.” “Oh, Eli.” I clutch his cheeks and kiss him, wedging my tongue between his teeth and sucking on his.
“Nothing that excessive.” I hesitate. “I…want children. Our children.” “Then you will have them. All three of them.” “R-really?” “You thought I’d say no?” “Yeah, well. You weren’t as open to the idea when we last talked about it.” “That was under different circumstances. You’re better now. Stronger. Livelier. If you want children, I’ll impregnate you with as many of them as you wish.”
“I think I’m going to die.” I stroke my wife’s blonde locks away from her face. “Not as long as I’m here.” “When I said I wanted three children, I didn’t mean at the same time.” “I know.” “It’s all because of you, bastard.” She closes her eyes while sitting upright as little Sierra sucks on her nipple.
By the time she’d finished the exponential job of birthing three whole humans, she was exhausted, her lips were chapped, and her face had lost color, but as soon as the nurse put our babies in our arms, she was smiling and crying. It was at that moment that I realized I have a whole family to be responsible for now. Two beautiful girls and a boy. And most importantly, their mother.
