But I couldn’t have any of that. It had been one of the rules that allowed me to live. I couldn’t go to them or contact them. If I did, he would kill them. That was what he had told me. He told me I had to live far away from them and stay away.
But none of them ever gave up. They were strong and brave and they taught me to be too. So I fought. I survived and I refused to give up.
I had never stopped caring for her. Her pictures had been with me through every tour. One of them sat beside my bed even now.
She made me feel alive again in a way no one else had since we all got out of the military. She made me dare to hope for a happier future.
“That’s it,” he declared with a half grin. “You just put me under your spell, darlin’. I’m yours now,” he chuckled.
