“How insufferable is all of this to you?” a voice I hardly recognize questions.
“I think we spend a great deal of time making people feel seen when that's so far from the case,”
“I don’t believe you. Your heart is racing right now,” he says, seeking a genuine answer. His fingertips meet my pulse along my neck. His head lowers, close enough to hear my shaky breaths. “Are you sure you’re trusting the right people?”
His hand rests on the back of her neck. It's a gesture so few know will calm her.
His curls are wild and unmanaged, framing his infuriatingly perfect face. His stubble is manicured, accentuating his jawline. He wears casual black pants, and his fingers are decorated with a few carefully chosen rings. I see a pocket watch dangle at his side, its chain attached to the loops of his belt.
“If you look at me like that again while thinking of him, Forest, or show me images of him touching you,” he mutters, his anger now more discernible. He moves my chin, facing it toward a metal table filled with odds and ends. “I can promise you I won’t be able to stop myself from laying you across that table and fucking you until you forget his name.”
“What's my name, Forest?” he questions, my mouth ready to taste his. “Xavier. Xavier Hayes,” I say, his head gently shaking. “Try again…. What's my name?” he asks again, my mind drawing nothing but blanks. “Your name's Xavier,” I whisper, unsure what he wants me to say. With a saddened expression, he pulls away, his hands slowly loosening their grasp.
I look at Xavier, and there’s that part of me that wants nothing but him. It eats me alive, a conviction I feel I have no control over.
