I smile, thank him again, and lead him to the door. He exits in a fog of uncertainty. Twenty minutes later, just as I’m finishing up my meal, Declan storms in. He snaps, “What have you done to Kieran?” “Moi?” I say innocently.
“You’re safe with me. You can let your guard down. I’ll catch you if you need to fall.”
“You can’t hide from me. I see you. I see all the strange and wonderful things you are, little lion.”
“I’m not sure you have fifty years left, geezer.” “Not if I spend much more time in your company, hellcat.”
“This is a dangerous game we’re playing.” “You don’t know the half of it.”
“Promise me you’ll—” “Aye. I promise.” “You don’t know what I was going to ask.” “It doesn’t matter. Ask me for anything. To be careful with you, to be honest with you, to bring you someone’s head on a plate. I’ll say aye. You’re not the only one in chains here.
“Because I take the words ‘until death do us part’ literally.”
