Dear god, how many times am I going to be kidnapped by alpha males this month? It’s getting ridiculous.
“I like your tats. Very Celtic. Did you know those spiral knots near your wrist represent a person’s journey through life and into the spirit world, or did you just think they looked pretty?” He tilts his head to one side. I smile at him. “I’ve done a lot of reading about spiritual journeys.”
“Nice to meet you, Declan.” I look directly at the glass when I say that, smiling my shit-eating smile. I hope whoever’s watching me behind that two-way mirror is having a meltdown. People hate it when you’re not terrified like they’re trying to make you be.
“Me? Play you for a fool? I would never. You seem much too intelligent. The plaid shirt’s a dead giveaway.”
“I’ll take over from here, Grayson.” “Grayson? Wow, that’s a very cool name. I bet you were super popular in high school.” Grayson does something strange with his mouth. I think he’s trying not to smile, but I could be imagining things.
“I’m sure we can manufacture something convincing.” “I’m sure you could. Government workers are always manufacturing some kind of bullshit to cover up their incompetence.”
Besides, it really wouldn’t be my fault. You’re the douchebags who have the control. Whatever nasty thing happened would be on your conscience, not mine.
“I actually don’t have to imagine. I’m very familiar with the particular brand of savagery that useless, worthless, dickless males enjoy. Go ahead, guys. Do your worst. I still don’t know who Declan fucking O’Donnell is.”
I manage to kick the suit in the kneecap on the way out. He falls to the floor, howling. What a sissy.
“A holding cell?” I thunder, infuriated. “You put my woman in a bloody holding cell?”
“He’s talking about your little girlfriend!” shrieks Thomas, still kneeling on the floor. “She’s as crazy as you are!”
Oh, baby. My fierce little lion. Hold on a bit longer, here I come.
I pass a shell-shocked-looking Kieran and Spider on my way into the house. Kieran says in Gaelic, “How is the wee lass?” “Alive,” I answer curtly.
“I can’t right now. I’m … I don’t know what I am. Mainly tired. I really need to sleep.” All the breath in my lungs leaves in a rush. “Bloody hell. I’m so sorry. I had no idea they’d do this. I—” “Stop.”
‘The wise warrior avoids the battle.’ I’m gonna sit this whole battle out.” She turns her head and looks me square in the eye. Looks at me with piercing intensity. My heart skips a beat. The cold in my body thaws, then turns boiling. That wasn’t the quote I told her. I know it. She knows it, too.
She sees my confusion. Moving casually, she encircles her right wrist with the thumb and index finger of her left hand. The other three fingers she spreads out like a fan. I recognize the sign instantly. It’s a tactical signal members of the military use to communicate silently with each other. She’s making the sign for enemy.
I remember Grayson telling me that the deputy director was impressed with her, and it all clicks. That bloody cunt tried to make my woman turn on me.
She only bends willingly. Even then, she’s still holding a sword.
Kage says loudly, “Baby? What baby?” Sloane and I look at each other and smile.
Spider smiles and tips up his chin. Kieran sends me a jaunty salute, grinning. “They seem like they’re in good moods,” I note as we drive through the gate. Declan says, “That’s because their fearless leader has returned.” “Aw. It must be a good feeling for you to have such loyal men.” His voice turns dry. “I wasn’t talking about me.” That makes me smile.
His smile is amused. “Roughly translated, ‘Welcome home, my queen.’” “Really? How fantastic. Can you tell all the guys to call me that?” “No.” “Okay. I’ll have Kieran tell them for me.”
His voice rough with emotion, he says, “You own me, Sloane. Every corner of my worthless black soul. Every piece of my corrupt black heart. You own it all, and you always will. I’m your slave, not the other way around. Never forget it.”
“The word’s out. You’re mine. Anyone who dares to do so much as breathe in your direction dies.”
