Whenever my blood jolted and worked up to a hum, strange incidents occurred around me—things that didn’t make sense and proved that something was seriously wrong with me: Dishes rattled on the table, lights flickered, and a sense of how people were feeling sometimes swamped me. The
He had at least six inches on me, and his black hair hung into his crystal-blue eyes, emphasizing their color. I wanted to get lost in them, and his amber-sandalwood scent made me want to rub myself all over him.
“Be careful, okay? Things aren’t as safe as they seem around here, and I don’t want anything to happen to you.”
The guy shrugged and flipped his auburn bangs out of his eyes. “What can you do when Raffe is the star quarterback, EEU’s football team captain, and the son of a billionaire who owns a majority of all the commercial real estate in Oregon? Add in the fact that Mr. Wright donates five million dollars to this school annually, and they don’t get into much trouble.”
Raffe’s nostrils were flared, and his eyes were glowing. His glare was on Slade, who had followed my gaze.
“You’re human, and I’m a wolf shifter.” He winced. “It’s forbidden for shifters to be with anyone who isn’t supernatural and frowned upon for us to date someone outside our own species. I’m the future king, so we … us … it can’t happen.”
He must have read my mind because his lips brushed mine. Electric sparks sizzled on my lips, the shock enough to make one word flash into my mind. Forbidden.
How could I hold getting drained against him when he hadn’t known and refused to train me until I’d recovered? “It’s not your fault. It’s just easier to be angry at you for everything, but I could’ve said no. It was my fault, not yours.”
I was drunk, and the way Raffe took off with you … I was afraid I’d lost you, and I’ve been doing stupid shit since then.” My blood settled to a jolt, the remorse coming off him lending truth to his words. Maybe we could salvage our friendship, even though that would take time. “Stop acting that way and quit giving me reasons not to talk to you.”
“Babe, where you’re concerned, I’ll kill anyone who’s ever done or will do you wrong.”
“Babe, I need you to calm down. You can’t die on me.” He rocked me like I was something precious, and his voice broke. “I can’t live in a world you’re not in.”
“Don’t lie to me. You haven’t even looked at me since you ended things.” “Me?” He scoffed, and his chest shook. “You’re the one who ended things and walked out. I’ve been trying to make it easier on you, but don’t fucking accuse me of not looking at you. I’ve watched you every fucking night as you snuck out to meet those damn witches.”
“What we have is something most people would kill for. It’s so damn rare and special, and not even love describes what I feel for you. You own me, babe, my heart and my
body, and you’re the other half of my soul. When I say I’ll kill anyone for hurting you and any man for touching you, I fucking mean it.”
