“Kill Dante. He deserves to die for this.” “He deserves to die for a lot of reasons.”
“I think you’re too fucking nice, Axel.” My eyes flicked away. “And you know what happens to nice guys? They get fucked over.”
But even if I did find that man, I’d just assume it would end with his infidelity—because a man like that was just too good to be true.
For a solid month, I was dead inside. And I guess I was still a little dead, just in a different way.
“Who is he?” My father relaxed in his chair, his anger starting to evaporate. “The Skull King.”
“Scary place for a woman who’s the size of a broomstick.” “This broomstick can break your jaw in a single hit,” I said automatically.
“I want you to marry my daughter.”
“Is this the fifteen hundreds and you’re marrying your daughter off to a king for political gain?” “Yes.” Dante said it just as calmly as before. “That’s exactly what I’m doing.”
Guess I had a type—the bad boy.
I shouldn’t give a shit…but I did.
His choice would only end one way, and the satisfaction would only last a heartbeat. His last one.
“I promise I will be faithful to you. I promise I will be honest with you. I promise I will protect you. I will be the best husband there ever was—if you give me a chance.”
I’ve turned off my heart and locked it in a cage, but I’m afraid you’re going to find the key and break in.”
Once I had her, I grabbed her. And this time, I wouldn’t let go.
The priest began the ceremony. And I married her.
“I’m your husband—” “And the man who has broken me beyond all repair.”
but now that I was beside him, what I wanted most was…this. Just to be with him.
“I’m not sleeping without you.” He raised his voice now, not quite yelling, but the increase in decibel was still terrifying. “I can’t go back now. I want you in my arms, every fucking night, until we die. End of story.”
I knew she didn’t want me for my money. Maybe my dick—but I was okay with that.
“I’ve always wanted to get in shape, but then I see the couch…and think about pizza, and all those ambitions go out the window.”
“You tried to take her away from me, tried to turn her against me, but you can’t. Because she fucking sees me. She sees past the bullshit and the lies. She sees who I really am inside. With every passing day, I’m fixing what you broke, and I know one day we’ll have what was denied to us. You can’t stop it.”
“Any time we were at the same party in the past, we always had to ignore each other. Now, you introduce me as your wife.” “I’d prefer to introduce you as something else, but it’d probably be inappropriate.” He smirked. I gave him a playful punch in the arm. “Such as?” His hand moved down and squeezed my ass right there in the middle of the party. “My hot piece of ass.”
“We’ll have our own babies, and I’ll be the best father there ever was. My love will be unconditional, and they’ll never wonder if I’ll be there for them. They’ll know there’s nothing they could ever do to lose me.”
“We’re a family,” he said as he held me. “You’re my family.”
“She’s mine now,” Axel said. “My wife. My family. My responsibility. You understand me?” Before he could be slammed into the wall again, my father said, “Yes…I understand you.”
“I loved you then, and I love you now. And all that time in between, I still loved you. I could have lost you tonight, so I’m not going to spend another moment pretending you aren’t the love of my life—because you are.”
“You know my heart. You know my soul. You have my fucking back, always have.” His fingers dug deeper into my hair. “And I have yours—always. I want you to say it back, but if you can’t, it’s okay. Because I know you…I know your heart, your soul, all of you. And I know you feel the same way.”
