“I promise I will be faithful to you. I promise I will be honest with you. I promise I will protect you. I will be the best husband there ever was—if you give me a chance.” I spoke my vows to her in that café instead of in the church, but it felt better this way, just the two of us, both broken.

His hand went to my stomach, and he cupped it, even though there was nothing there. “We’ll have our own babies, and I’ll be the best father there ever was. My love will be unconditional, and they’ll never wonder if I’ll be there for them. They’ll know there’s nothing they could ever do to lose me.”
He gave an angry sigh. “I loved you then, and I love you now. And all that time in between, I still loved you.
“Trust me,” he said. “I’d die for you. I’d kill for you. I love you more than any man has ever loved a woman. I’m so fucking in love with you it makes me want to explode. Don’t let the past interfere with this moment…because it’s real.” My
