Because it’s the fucking truth. If this girl tried to leave me, there is no telling the lengths I’d be prepared to go to in order to find her. Keep her.
“I’ll always love you,” Kathryn says, pulling back to look at me. “Promise me you’ll always remember that. Never, ever doubt that I love you, Gray.”
“I promise I’ll never forget that you love me,” I tell her. “Not even when I’m old and lose my memory and shit. The one thing I will always remember is that you love me, Kathryn.”
“You know you’re always safe with me, Kathryn. I’d die before I ever let anything hurt you,”
“I don’t want any babies if they’re not yours, Gray. I want a little girl with your green eyes. We’ll name her Graycee, and I already know she’s going to be a huge daddy’s girl.”
He’s worried. And he should be. The whole fucking world should be if I don’t find my girlfriend.
“Two thousand, one hundred, and eighty-four days,” he says. “That’s how long I’ve been looking for you. So, imagine my surprise when you show up right here, in Vancouver, on my metaphorical doorstep, after all this time.”
“You might hate me, Grayson Monroe, but I know you also still love me. Otherwise you would have killed me by now.”
“Love you too, Daddy,” she says, then adds, “And, Daddy, make sure you hit ʼem harder.”
Having him inside me is a feeling I can’t describe. But it’s something like coming home. Being where I belong. A place I never should have left.
“I think we will always be an us, Kathryn. We probably have some shit to work through, but it’s always been you. It will always be you.”
If it comes down to me or Grayson, I will choose him. There isn’t even a question about it.
This is something I didn’t know I was missing in my life. Having a daughter, having my girl back, letting go of that anger I’ve been holding in for all this time… It makes me feel a whole lot lighter.
“You are Grayson Monroe, a Stanley Cup champion. A father, a damn good one too. You’re my…” I pause, wondering what title is appropriate. “You’re my person, Gray. You’re my soul mate. But don’t tell Lil that because she really does think that’s her spot. And you are a good man. You’re caring, loyal, and fiercely protective of the people you love. Can you be an ass at times? Sure.” I smile and Grayson frowns at me. “But you’re an ass I happen to love and really don’t want to have to go back to living without. Ever again,” I tell him.
