And so, I do the only thing that a reasonable, sane, mature, twenty-five year old woman who’s just been dumped on national television would do: I reach up, grab the back of his head… and dunk his stupid blind-bat face in the vat of wrong-color-red frosting. Fa la la la la la la la la.
i don't think it would look good on tv for her. but in reality he deserves it. that terrible, no good cheating prick. why are guys such dicks?
“Madelyn Louise Grainger, will you temporarily marry me?” I smile back at him. Not only because it’s absolutely endearing that he used my full name. But also because this is beginning to sound hilarious, and also smart. “I mean… why the hell not?”
Seb chucks my chin. “Have you forgotten where we are?” “Oh my gosh!” I squeal, almost sliding off my stool again. “We’re in Vegas, baby!”
This morning, I am two things I was not yesterday. First, I am a meme. Second, I am married. I think. I have no idea if drunken chapel weddings where the groom is wearing a traffic cone on his head and the bride is draped in a hotel bedsheet are actually considered legal.
“I’m a jealous man, Madelyn,” he whispers in my ear. “So you’ll be wearing my name tonight, or nobody’s.”
Why does my husband have to be so damn sexy? And why does he have to know it? I can tell that he knows how flustered I am, but he seems to take pity on me, because he simply nods. “See you tonight, Mrs. Slater.”
To score. To lead my team to a win. To make a certain someone in the crowd proud that she’s wearing my damn name on her back.
“Well, I’m bringing a new tradition.” Seb shoots me a cheeky grin. “Voodoo cookies for anyone who upsets my wife.”
After everything that she’s done for me, the least I can do is be the best husband in the world for her.
“You’re special, Maddie.” My voice is so full of gravel, I barely recognize it. “And I’m going to do everything in my power to show you just how special you are.”
His words give me life. His very presence gives me life. Because once again, he’s shown up for me without me even having to say anything. He just knows.
Because somehow, things have shifted and changed. Somehow, since I drunkenly proposed to this incredible, hilarious, minorly insane and totally beautiful woman, she’s become one of the most important people in my life. And somehow, in the space of a few days here at the cabin, I know that this marriage is the realest thing to ever happen to me.
“Well, Captain, it’s that… I think I might have accidentally fallen in love with my wife.”
“I don’t care. You come first. And I wanna do this with you. Prove that I’m in this for you, and for us. We’re a team now, you and me. That comes with both risk and reward… and you’re worth risking everything else for.”
“Madelyn Louise Grainger Slater… will you make me the happiest man alive and do me the honor of continuing to be my wife?” “YES!” I practically scream through my tears. “Yes, yes, a million times yes!”
