The Chinese pride themselves on “humaneness,” or ren, as it was known, and it was an idea as fundamental to conceptions of morality in China as the principle of “do unto others” was in the West. But in recent years, as a practical matter, kids in China were also raised to be mindful of less inspiring concerns, such as zuo haoshi bei e—which means “doing something helpful and getting cheated in the process.”
