It was all rather in keeping with the theme of the last six years of Salavert’s life—a saga of dreams, itching, and abysmal disappointment.

“It’s Bat Guy.” “Bat Guy?” Ellie echoed. “I’ve seen him around, though usually when they draw him full size he’s got this big pair of…” Bates’s enthusiastic explanation trailed off. He glanced over at her awkwardly. “Well, he’s definitely a Bat Guy and not a Bat Girl, is what I’m saying.”
“Hiking,” Bates blurted, snapping his gaze away from her. “Love hiking. Sounds good to me. Best get some sleep.”
Roasted javelina would go very nicely with tortillas. It would probably taste a bit like justice.
“If I’m going to take you… every perfect, infuriating inch of you,” he elaborated as his eyes moved over her in a way that felt as intense as a touch. “I’m not going to do it like this.” “Every inch?” Ellie echoed roughly.
“Stay perfectly still, Mr. Bates.” “I’ve had my tongue in your ear,” Adam cheerfully reminded her. “Pretty sure we can drop the ‘mister.’” Ellie shot him a glare. “Be quiet!” she ordered.
“To accidentally wiping out every vestige of a lost world,” he said.
