“I’m sorry for how we met, but don’t worry. You’ll get over it.” He sends me that smile, the infuriatingly charming one, before adding, “I’m insanely likable.”
“You’re no ice queen. You’re pure fire.”
The seeds of a desire to practice medicine that were planted deep in my subconscious with Mr. Chen’s anatomy book now start to grow roots.
I witness firsthand how important a doctor’s job is, how a good doctor can spark hope even in the darkest times.
“Has it occurred to you that maybe, just maybe, I hoped you would call me? Maybe you aren’t the only one who’s scared, the only one with something to lose.”
Minutes later, I’m almost asleep, in that twilight on the threshold to oblivion, when I hear him whisper, “You belong with me.”
Most people don’t know what to say when someone you love dies so they stay silent, but that doesn’t help. I’m glad we talked.”
“All day? I’ve been thinking about this since the moment we met.”
“You’ve got me shaken up like a bottle of champagne. Once you take that cork out, I won’t be able to put it back in.”
There will be no nightmares tonight. Only dreams coming true.
“You’re mine now. All mine.” There’s something primal in his voice, something fierce, possessive, and unyielding.
Even though I hadn’t told him I was worried about messing up that part of my lecture, he had known. That’s how well he understands me. It’s a special thing, to be seen and accepted like that.
Who is Rafe? Savior? Protector? Betrayer? Friend or Foe?
“I haven’t had a lot of things I could call mine. Medicine was my parents’ and my brother’s. Baseball, maybe, but I lost that. But you, you’re mine, and I’ll be damned if I’m going to lose you.
Of all his many smiles, this is the biggest, the most brilliant.
“You know,” he says, his smile fading into a serious look, “sometimes good people do bad things. I think the person you need forgiveness from the most isn’t me. I think it’s you. You need to forgive yourself.”
“Have I told you recently that I’m glad you’re here with me?” Ethan grins crookedly. “It’s like I’m always telling you. You’re stuck with me.”
