Am I a strong, independent woman? Absolutely. Does it feel amazing to know this man has made an effort to protect me? To demand better behavior from his teammate? Hell, yes. “Thank you, Nathan,” I say softly.
“I just don’t like it when people mess with my people.” The loyalty in Nathan’s voice is clear and unwavering, and I wonder if other teams in the league have this kind of kinship. It’s not a wonder Nathan was willing to sign a contract to play only for the Appies.
“Thanks, Alec. I appreciate you telling me.” “I’m here for you, all right?” He tilts his head toward Nathan. “And I love the big idiot, so I’d kinda like to see this happen for you.”
“I don’t think you’re half as grumpy as people say you are. You’ve got this broody, frowny persona publicly, but deep down, you’re kind of a big softie.” His lip ticks up to the side. “Don’t go telling the rest of the team. You’ll blow my cover.”
“I don’t…want you to go,” he says, and my hand stills. “I just…think you should go because of how much I want you to stay.”
Surround yourself with men who do better, who inspire you to greatness. Good teammates and good friends will always want what is best for you as an individual.”
“I don’t think you’re giving yourself enough credit, but I love you. And I believe in you enough for the both of us.”
