“I want you to take these,” I order. Almost hesitantly, she fingers the tag. “Remember, Koty, you need anything, you call me.”
“I mean it. Anytime you ask, I’ll be there. Five seconds, five minutes, five lifetimes. I will always come for you. No matter what.”
“Dakota?” Without hesitation, she walks right into my arms. “You came,” she says, sighing into my chest. “You called.” I exhale, tension leaving my body as I wrap my arms around her.
In the fluorescent light of the motel, I see a bruised cheekbone. Black eye. A busted lip. Rage courses through me, swift, blinding. “Who did this, Dakota?” I demand, fighting to keep my voice controlled even as my breath comes out in ragged pants. “Who. The fuck. Did this?” Her eyes flutter closed. “Davis, don’t—” “Cupcake, I’m gonna need you to shut that pretty mouth and let me hold you.”
“It fucking matters,” I growl. “A whole hell of a lot.” She waves her hand up her body, stopping at her face. “What do you think?” Bitterness stains her husky voice. “I lived right. I loved wrong. End of fucking story.”
This, I realize, is why I’ve come home. Davis Montgomery keeps those he cares about safe. And that safety is everything to me.
“Why are you doin’ this, D? Kindness of your heart?” He gives me a crooked grin. “We’re gentlemen, but we’re cowboys, too.” I glare at him. “Ford. I don’t have time for this.” “Fine, you fuckin’ lockbox. Keep that shit to yourself. Like always.” His eyes meet mine, smug. “Come find me when you put her name on your boot.”
He stares into the dark and says, “I wanted to make you happy, so I let you go.” This time, he looks at me. His throat works. “I let you go because I love you.”
There’s nothing sexier to me than watching Davis—steady, disciplined Davis Montgomery—fighting for control. His ridged muscles rippling, the hiss of air between his teeth. Hooded brown eyes glazed with lust.
“You and that baby—I’m going to spoil you fucking senseless. Love you both so damn hard. Protect you until the end of my goddamn days. I swear to God.”
“I say…I love you, Davis Montgomery.” Her voice cracks. “And I’m so honored that you let me see you.”
“You should tell your daughter you’re proud of her, sir. I think she’d want to know.” The old man’s gray eyes go misty.
“And I’m going to turn it into a bakery.” He looks me in the eyes. “Tell me what you need.” This man. This beautiful man. “Nothing. I am going to live and bake and be happy.” I wiggle my brows. “You want to do it with me?” His gaze darkens. “Every goddamn day.”
Fallon isn’t waiting for my answer. She jabs a nail into my chest, staring coolly back at me. “You hurt her, and I run my truck through your lodge.” She shrugs. “It’s already red, so your blood won’t make a difference.”
“Wherever you are is home, Davis. You just tell me where to plant roots.”
A pissed off woman, a hurt woman, turns into one hell of a warrior.
