I’m a soldier. A man of rules. Secrets. But when it comes to Dakota McGraw, I’ve broken every single one of them.
“I want you to take these,” I order. Almost hesitantly, she fingers the tag. “Remember, Koty, you need anything, you call me.”
“I mean it. Anytime you ask, I’ll be there. Five seconds, five minutes, five lifetimes. I will always come for you. No matter what.”
Someone once said life begins with a bang and ends with a whimper. But I think it starts with fire. Burn everything down to build it back up.
Rope the moon. My mother’s words blaze a trail to my heart. She never explained what it meant, but I’ve always interpreted it as go after what you want. Make it yours through grit, grace, or gumption.
“You came,” she says, sighing into my chest. “You called.” I exhale, tension leaving my body as I wrap my arms around her.
In the fluorescent light of the motel, I see a bruised cheekbone. Black eye. A busted lip. Rage courses through me, swift, blinding. “Who did this, Dakota?” I demand, fighting to keep my voice controlled even as my breath comes out in ragged pants. “Who. The fuck. Did this?” Her eyes flutter closed. “Davis, don’t—” “Cupcake, I’m gonna need you to shut that pretty mouth and let me hold you.”
Davis Montgomery is as rugged as the leather jacket he wears. Sculpted muscle. Broad shoulders. Tan as buckskin. Close-cropped brown hair. The light scruff on his face frames a strong jaw. Stern brown eyes with crinkles at the corner that exude an intense, ferocious energy. And that soft, southern drawl. Whiskey, honey, and a late-night lullaby all rolled into one handsome country boy.
Koty. My Dakota. Mine.
She’s still in my bloodstream. She’s never been gone. Not for a hot fucking second. Never.
“You think I haven’t imagined us together every single day since you left?” I rasp when I pull away from her. My heart pulses in time with my throbbing cock. “You think I haven’t been worried sick when you went silent? That’s why I fucking dream at night now. Because I lost you. Because I couldn’t find you, and it terrified me, Dakota.”
“Trust the land,” I say fiercely. “The ranch takes care of us, and I’ll take care of you.” She bounces her hip against mine. “And I’ll take care of you.”
He puts a hand on mine and stops me before I can set down the platter. “I eat your sweets.” His reply is curt, raspy. His nostrils flare and my heart speeds up. “I don’t share you, Koty. Not with anyone.”
on. “I thought I did, during those first few months. But it wasn’t love. It was something to fill the space. Your space.” His big hand curls around the back of my neck. “That’s because you never should have been his.” Butterflies explode in my stomach. “And why’s that?” “Because you’re mine,” he says gruffly, and my heart tumbles. “And I’m the fucking fool who let you go.”
“I let you go because I love you.” I gasp. “What?” “I love you, Dakota.” His hands move to cup my face. “I’ve loved you since that summer before you left.”
“You and that baby—I’m going to spoil you fucking senseless. Love you both so damn hard. Protect you until the end of my goddamn days. I swear to God.”
“If you go, I will chase you. I will find you and bring you back home. You belong here. With me.”
