We have a sense that the Church, for much of its history, has been quite happy to think of Jesus having all authority in heaven, but has yet to work out what it might mean that he – the Jesus of cross, resurrection and spirit – already possesses all authority on earth. A good way to begin that discussion might be with Psalm 72, which emphasises that the priorities of God’s true King are looking after the poor and needy and rescuing them from oppression and violence.
