When we read the Bible, therefore, we must be aware of the false dichotomies, the foreign categories and the freighted presuppositions that people project upon it. True, the gospel cannot be reduced to a this-worldly project of social betterment. But neither is the gospel an escapist drama for the soul pining for the angelic decor of heaven.
