If you ask an AI to give you a citation or a quote, it is going to generate that quote or citation based on the connections between the data it learned, not retrieve it from memory. If the quote is famous, like “Four score and seven years ago,” the AI will finish it properly: “. . . our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” The AI has seen those connections enough times to figure out the next word.
