So accustomed was he becoming to the curious luminance, he’d almost stopped noticing the change. Low cloud continued to blanket the entire sky, the sun hidden. There wasn’t a breath of wind to move the clouds. And yet the daylight beneath the cloud cover made all that it revealed starker. No sound carried.

Vestigial yet sinuous, the thing was moving along the face of the neighbouring house. Pressed to the charred stone, it brought into his mind the image of a crab picking its way over a reef. What thrust out from the misted rags possessed the dimensions of a large serpent, some form of neck or trunk that he’d glimpsed before when fleeing the village.
