“Local people” could also be very astute at picking up on a wrong-headed question—and far gentler about pointing it out. What I remember most about talking to them, though, is their predisposition to assume without evidence that I was doing something good and worthwhile, a reflection of the same expansive sense of community they brought to the movement, transforming it.
