In this debate, Marx was probably one of the most original and acute voices. He came to question the technological determinism according to which the machine would be the prime mover of industrial capitalism. Reversing the common perception of the relation between technology and economy, he argued that technological development (the means of production) is triggered by the division of labour (the relations of production) and not the other way around.
