Abstraction always operates within given material constraints and through them: symbols, tools, techniques, and technologies are conceived and realised in relation to limited resources of matter, energy, space, time, and so on. The reality which abstraction is struggling with is not the idealised space of Platonic ideas but the actual living world, made of force fields and conflicts. In this sense, abstraction is also part of the larger social antagonism.
