Now she realized the opposite was true. The family she came from defined her and always would. She didn’t read on the bus that afternoon, just stared out the window. The worst part of it hit her then: her mother knew why Jane had been chosen. That was why she hadn’t mentioned the letter. Jane felt guilty for putting her mother in the position of having her failings pointed out to her like that. And furious at her mother for being such a failure in the first place.
