When I finally got to her building, I hoped the world’s slowest elevator would get me to her floor before it was time for me to collect Social Security. I shoved my hands in my pockets and rocked back and forth on my heels. The doors finally opened and I rushed out. Wiping my hands on my jeans, I took a deep breath. Lifting my hand to knock on her door,
Her fingers flew faster over the strings as the song reached its crescendo, and the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. I could spend the next fifty years with this girl and I’d still be learning more about her. That thought sent a jolt through my body.
She grabbed her coat. I held it up and she slipped her arms inside, smiling at me over her shoulder. Her lips were so close to mine. The taste and feel of them had been etched on my soul.
“Then why are you so quiet?” She peered over at me, trying to catch my eye. Because I want to kiss you again. I want to do more than kiss you again, and I want tonight to be special. I don’t want to fuck up and make you regret it. “No reason.”
A pair of lips pressed against my shoulder,
She was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen.
I did as my lady asked.
A shudder wracked his body and I smiled against his lips. I wasn’t the only one ready to come out of my skin.
Uncertainty clouded his eyes and, if anything, made him even sexier. He was worried. “Was it okay?” He lifted his hips, pulling himself free from me. The cool air of the room replaced the warmth of his possession of my body. “That’s supposed to be my line.” I brushed the hair back from over his ears and ran my hand along his cheek. “It was more than I ever could have hoped for.” His relief was absolute.
“Stop worrying. I’m fine—better than fine. Sore”—his muscles tensed—“but that’s to be expected. There had to be a first, and I’m glad it was you.” A cloud flashed across his eyes and he pulled me closer, hugged me tighter, and held on to me like I was a buoy in a hurricane. “What’s wrong?” I asked softly. His lips tickled my shoulder. “Nothing. Let’s get some sleep.” He pulled the blankets up higher.
Marisa cupped her hands around her mouth. “L!” She pointed to her head, gathering up her hair in her hand. Her glossy curls tumbled everywhere. His head snapped up and he rolled his eyes before tugging something off his wrist and shooting it at her slingshot style. Her hand shot out and she snagged the light blue circle from the air.
“Always the perfect player.”
She stepped forward but stopped halfway across the room like she wanted to be able to make a fast getaway. “I came to say sorry.” I wiped the sweat off my face with a towel. “Why are you sorry, Seph?” It seemed like she’d spent her whole life being sorry and apologizing for shit she didn’t need to.
“I’ve been dreaming of you every night, and if I’m still dreaming, I don’t want to wake up. I need you.”
Sometimes I’d wake up at night, run my fingers through her waves, and watch her sleep until it got too hard to breathe. Then I’d have to slam my eyes shut and let her steady breaths calm me.
“I’ll come back as soon as I’m finished. I l—” His eyes widened and he froze. “I’m glad you’re feeling better.” “How about I meet you at the Brothel? I need to get out of this place after being trapped inside for a few days.” “Okay, message me when you get there.” He pulled open my bedroom door. “The key’s inside the light beside the front door.” His gaze raked over me and he rushed back in, kissing me on the forehead before disappearing like if he didn’t do it quickly, he wouldn’t be able to go.
Her eyes glittered with a love I’d never experienced before, the kind I’d run headlong away from even the hint of, but with her, I wanted it all. I wanted even more, and that scared the ever-loving shit out of me.
Seph let go of him and smiled, the gentle, kind expression she had for anyone she cared about. The ice cracked under my feet and I wished I were on a lake that could swallow me up. I’d rather have felt the icy daggers of freezing winter water than watch her with someone else.
