“I told them I had a girlfriend.” I start to laugh. “This is the greatest day of my life.” “Oh, it gets better, Dixon. I told them it was you.”
“Okay, so to recap, I’m your pretend girlfriend and I have free rein in what I say? I can create a rich tapestry of our love?” “If you come and help me, you can do whatever the hell you want.” I can’t stop smiling. “Give me an hour.”
“Thank you, by the way.” He shifts his face back to the water. “I know you’re not my biggest fan, but you still came over and helped me out. I appreciate it.” “You’re welcome. And I have the perfect way for you to repay me.” He glances over suspiciously. “Okay, picture this,” I start with a beaming smile. “No.” “Picture this. You and me. Gliding across the ballroom floor together in an elegant Viennese waltz.”
See? I know how to cheer Dixon up.
And another confession: I like to dance.
It’s not a date, and I am the most loyal fake girlfriend you will ever have. I fake love you, Shane. I want to fake marry you and have your fake babies. Okay?” I glare at her. “Uncalled for. I can’t believe you brought our fake children into this.”
I love a woman who will talk back and put me in my place. Dixon does that in spades. I never know what crazy shit is going to come out of her mouth, and I sort of love it.
“No man is allowed to touch you but me, Dixon.” His voice is low. Thick with desire. “And if one tries, I’ll rip his fucking hands off.”
“His dick,” I confess. “I’ve fallen into his dicksand.” Will nods solemnly. “I’m sorry.”
“You heard the stories my dad told you. I’m the one who kicks people’s asses. I’m not the woman who gets hit by a man, all right? I didn’t report it because I can’t be that woman.” “Baby.” I unbuckle my seat belt, then lean over to unbuckle hers. “Come here.” “No.” She tries to twist away from me. “Come here,” I repeat, reaching for her. This time she doesn’t resist. She climbs into my lap and buries her face in my neck.
“Good. Be angry, baby.”
“I was wrong about you, Lindley. Turns out you’re actually a good guy.”
“I don’t want you to change. I want you for you. Drama and all.” I grin at her. “So will you please be my real girlfriend?”
“Never saw it coming, Dixon. But you’re everything to me. I don’t know when it happened, but it’s true. You’re the heartbeat of my days. You’re the reason I look forward to tomorrow. I honestly never thought I’d find someone who understands me so completely.”
