“Don’t worry, we didn’t see a thing.” The reassurance comes from the boy-next-door face of Will Larsen. “I saw your tits and one butt cheek,” Beckett Dunne says helpfully.
RYDER: Me personally? Fuck no. But lemme ask the wife. If she wants to go, I’ll go. BECKETT: Wow. RYDER: Wow what? BECKETT: That woman owns you now. You realize that, right, mate? RYDER: Yes and?
Rather than walk off, he peers down at me, thoughtful. “What?” I say. Shane gestures toward the pizza box, the beer, the TV. “This is a truce, right?” “No.” I snicker. “And you’re naive for even asking that.” “I know. I felt stupid the moment I said it.” He lets out a sigh. “Let me grab those refills.”
During my cleaning mission, it comes to my attention that I don’t own a vacuum. I have no idea how my mother allowed this atrocity to happen.
“Later, Dixon.” “Thanks for the ride, Daddy.” “Don’t turn me on this early in the morning, please.”
I’m pretty sure this girl hates me, but I don’t know how much sympathy I can muster for her. She’s sitting there with her boyfriend at her side. She has no right to be overtly hostile to her ex-boyfriend’s fake girlfriend. Honestly, this is fun. I’m absolutely nailing this role. And I’ve only just begun. Shane’s going to kill me.
He’s got big hands, probably on account of his two-foot dick.
I have no idea what it will take to win her over. She just needs to, I don’t know, swallow her pride. And then swallow my dick.
“He asked me, as a friend, to have dinner with him tonight. It’s not a date, and I am the most loyal fake girlfriend you will ever have. I fake love you, Shane. I want to fake marry you and have your fake babies. Okay?” I glare at her. “Uncalled for. I can’t believe you brought our fake children into this.”
“Dicksand?” “Yeah, like quicksand. But your dick is the trap, and I’ve been sucked into it.” “Wouldn’t your pussy be the quicksand ’cause it’s the one sucking my dick into it?” We stare at each other for a moment. “Why are we like this?” he sighs. “I don’t know, but—wait, no, don’t say we. You. You are the weird one.”
“No man is allowed to touch you but me, Dixon.” His voice is low. Thick with desire. “And if one tries, I’ll rip his fucking hands off.”
We race into the kitchen like a pair of schoolboys. Tom opens the cooler, his entire face scrunched in concentration as he examines the selection of sausages I brought. “Well?” I say, holding my breath. He lifts his head. “We’re best friends now. Diana, please excuse us.”
“Why would he crash here when he has his own bed?” I answer for Shane. “I don’t need him clinging to me all night and suffocating me with his love.” “You fuckin’ love my love,” Shane grumbles. He gives Will a firm look. “She loves my love.”
“And one more thing,” Shane says, tugging on my hand before I can leave. “You are unstoppable. Don’t let what this one asshole did convince you that you’re anything other than unstoppable. You’re Diana Dixon, for chrissake.” I crack a smile. “Damn right I am.”
and suddenly we’re surrounded by the most melodramatic music, courtesy of my melodramatic woman.
“But it resulted in me marrying my woman and dancing a mean cha cha, so…” He shrugs. “You’re better than that, Lindley. Practice harder.” He stomps off, and I stare after him. Chad Jensen is full of surprises, and, honestly, the gift that keeps on giving. I can’t wait to tell the boys about— Halfway down the hall, Coach turns to smirk at me. “If you try to tell anyone about this, I’ll deny it. You will look like a fool.” Goddamn it. How does he know?
“Fuck. I’m so sorry I ever gave you the idea that I wanted you to change yourself.” She clutches the top of her towel to keep it in place. “I won’t,” she says, unwavering. “Change myself, that is. I’m melodramatic and weird and I argue a lot, and that’s my personality. If that scares someone—” “Doesn’t scare me,” I interject. “I don’t want you to change. I want you for you. Drama and all.”
“Never saw it coming, Dixon. But you’re everything to me. I don’t know when it happened, but it’s true. You’re the heartbeat of my days. You’re the reason I look forward to tomorrow. I honestly never thought I’d find someone who understands me so completely.”
“Anyway, congratulations,” he says. “For what?” “I’m leaving you in charge of deciding when you birth our children.”
