words, his breath against my cheek. “Fuck. It feels like finding faith.”
“I’d wait ten years for you again. I’d wait a million more seconds to see you like this, and every single one would be worth it.”
“That’s my good little slut.”
“Because, like every other powerful man in America, he wants to police a woman’s body, shame her for her choices until those choices affect him. Then, of course, he needs his options open.”
I’m imagining that this is exactly what heaven looks, feels, and smells like when I grab her chin and lift her head so her eyes meet mine. “Then I’ll spend the rest of my life showing you exactly why you do. Why you deserve everything.”
“You’re the one who chases my ghosts away now,” she whispers. I lean into her, laughing against her lips. “You’re still the sunlight shining through the cracks of my shattered soul.”
Like I’m worth something to her. Worth something to the world. Darby looks at me like I’m loved—something I haven’t felt in a long, long time.
Distance is finite. It can be conquered. But you and I, Honeysuckle, we are infinite. We are destined. Written in the stars. Proof of the divine. We’re meant to be.
Baby, I’m yours, Leo
“I’m the one who came inside you twice last night. The least I can do is pay for your Plan B.”
“Plus, I’m a fucking gentleman, and the fact that you think for one second I would ever expect you to buy your own birth control is insulting.”
“You’re not unemployed. You’re a teacher, and it’s summer break. You’re not homeless. I’m your home.” He leans into my ear. “And you’re not engaged to that man. The next time you want to refer to yourself as engaged, you let me know, because the only person you’re marrying in this life is me.”
“I’ve never been enough to make someone stay before. I think that might be why I’ve fought so hard to be successful, to make money, to have a name. I’ve been fighting to be enough for someone.” His voice cracks. “To be enough for you.”
I meant to ask was: what the fuck do you want?”
“Now bend over the hood and lift that little dress up so I can fuck out my frustrations, will you?”
“Does it make you wet to know I’m about to fuck you out here in the open, where anyone could see us?”
“It’s called ‘Baby I’m Yours.’”
“It’s real. We’re real. And I love you.” Cupping my jaw, he drops his head so our foreheads press together. “I love you, too, Honeysuckle. With every single shard of my broken soul.”
you took my soul with you when you left. I’m not just haunted by ghosts anymore; I think I am one.
“Tell me it’s not my fault.”
“I love you, Leo.” “I love you, Darby. I’ve always loved you.”
“You’re my ‘it for me’ person. You were my first love. Then, the one who got away. Now, you’re my ‘it was always you.’ And it doesn’t matter what happened in between, because you’re gonna be my forever person too.” He cups my face, bringing his mouth to mine. “You’re my once-in-a-lifetime kind of love, Darby.”
“I’ll write you a love letter every day for the rest of my life if you just come home, Honeysuckle. Stay with me.”
“I’m already home, Leo.”
And you know what’s more powerful than fear, sunshine? Love. Love is brave. Love is courageous. That’s terrifying to people who are incapable of it.
“You’re an angel,” I whisper. “An angel and her demon.” She sighs against my lips. “A heathen and his honeysuckle,”
“My whore,” he whispers.
“Don’t mute us, baby. I want him to hear as I make you come so that he’ll never be mistaken again.”
