“I don’t have an accent.” He slowly raises one brow. “Yeah, you do. It sounds like you’ve got honey in your mouth when you’re talking.” “And it sounds like you have bullshit in yours. Where’s that accent from?” I smile at him before clamping my mouth shut. I never speak like that. I don’t know what has gotten into me. He gives me a smile that is nothing but troublesome. “Yep. Honeysuckle.” “Excuse me?” “You remind me of honeysuckle. Nectar sweet as honey, like the sound of your voice. But the berries are deceiving—poisonous if consumed.” He shrugs playfully. “Beautiful and deadly.”
“That boy is a heathen. If you’re smart, you’d stay far away from him.” “He certainly is,” I respond, knowing I’m nowhere near as smart as she thinks.
“I want to bring you with me because you scare my ghosts away, Darby.”
I squeeze her hand four times. I’ll. Keep. You. Safe. We jump together, free-falling into the abyss.
On instinct, I find my hand on her chin, my thumb tugging on that lower lip and removing it from her teeth. “Don’t ever hide your smiles from me, Honeysuckle. I need to see every single one, especially the ones I put there.” I move my hand to cup her cheek. “Show me every smile, and I’ll do whatever you want, yeah?”
“You’d wait a whole year just for me to come back?” “I think I might wait my whole life for you to come back, Darby. Something tells me there would be no point in trying to move on from this, because I’d end up searching for you in every place I go, in every person I meet, aimlessly wandering until I find you again.”
You’re not just the honey, Darby. You’re the whole damn flower. Do not forget you have poison berries. You have strength, resilience, and an independent mind. You do not need to conform to anyone else’s way of living.
“Elena, Everett, and I all share the same account, and we’ve spent years cultivating the perfect playlist for every situation. This is the driving-with-the windows-down-in-a-stolen-car-with-a-beautiful-girl playlist.” Somehow, I don’t believe that’s what it’s called.
“The moon wraps around you in the distance like a halo. You’re glowing.” He drags his fingers across my collarbone. “An angel. An angel and her demon.” I close the gap between us once more, feathering my lips over his. “A honeysuckle and her heathen.”
Long lashes flutter upward, blue eyes blazing through me. “I’ve never been much of a believer, baby.” He presses a kiss to my center. “But fuck, I’ll gladly kneel before you, worship at your altar.” I feel his lips move along my inner thigh as he whispers, “Pray for the salvation that can only be found between your legs.”
“You’re still the sunlight shining through the cracks of my shattered soul.”
“You’re an angel,” I whisper. “An angel and her demon.” She sighs against my lips. “A heathen and his honeysuckle,” I respond.
