One night as Dantzel and Russell were walking down Boylston Street in Boston, Dantzel pressed her nose against the windowpane of a furniture store and wistfully asked, "Do you think we'll ever be able to afford a lamp?" They had been married nine years by then, and Russell thought this was not an unreasonable request. They had become accustomed to looking at the things others had without really feeling much envy because they simply knew they could not afford them. Dantzel confessed to an occasion when she nearly lost her temper. She had inherited a family heirloom, a beautiful cut-glass bowl that had been given to her mother as a wedding gift, which she had placed on a table in
the living room. As the grandchildren were playing upstairs on this occasion, a ball came rolling down, bouncing onto the table and smashing the bowl into countless shards of glass. After taking a deep breath, she said, "Well, it's my own fault. I should have known better than to put that beautiful cut-glass bowl on that table with little children around."36
