“She once told me that if I didn’t hop on one foot and clap my hands, she would curse me to never again be able to have happy dreams. She said all of them would be nightmares, and I would never sleep well until I died—only then would I have peace.” Ash raised her eyebrows and laughed. “And what did you do?” “I hopped on one foot and clapped, of course. I’m not going to risk that curse.”
“Kiss me? Why, Baron Revich, I thought you’d never ask.” She grinned, her lips lingering above his own, all sense of caution gone as she leaned closer to his warm body. “It’s Rev,” he whispered, mumbling the rest on her open mouth, “just Rev.”
she was not expecting Rev’s. They were most often the deep hue of a dusk sky on the brink of utter darkness.
“Satisfy your desires, but keep your heart to yourself. You are its sole protector.”
Of all the stories and songs of the Blightress she knew, the origins of her anger were never mentioned.
‘Without anger, She laughed in mirth. Without love, She left them bleeding. Without hope, She walks the earth. Without fear, Her heart is fleeting.’”
“So go. Be great. Be happy and fulfilled. But know this, Ash’Arah—if you leave, you leave a stain. I have scoured and I have scrubbed until I have little feeling left, yet thoughts of you remain. Since the day you arrived, you have not left my thoughts, and I cannot seem to distance my soul from yours.
You cannot sit there and confess the very things I have been wanting you to confess. The very things I would lose myself to with another flash of your stupid smile.”
“I love you,” he repeated. “These words are yours. And they are words I will speak forever until the day I am forced to stop.”
The Blight was growing. And it was coming for her.
He must have been tired this morning. He took more life from her than usual and more quickly as well.
“I would think an adult woman would know a floral skirt when she saw one and how to avoid a bog monster, but you did not know those things, did you?”
