I think I just realized something... If Emilie is "princess" that means Shannon was too… and could indeed now be the queen.
Rafe and Jeremy rode hard. Emilie slept miserably. We’ll skip ahead to the next morning if you don’t mind.

Jeremy passed his queen his sword. Emilie knelt, and Skya tapped her gently on her left shoulder, then her right. Then with a butter knife, she tapped Fritz even more gently on his left shoulder, then his right.

Emilie wrapped her fingers around the bag and whispered, “Thank you for the magical unicorn mechanical pencil with endless pencil lead just like the one my sister used to have so she can write another story.”

All books are magic. An object that can take you to another world without even leaving your room? A story written by a stranger and yet it seems they wrote it just for you or to you? Loving and hating people made out of ink and paper, not flesh and blood? Yes, books are magic. Maybe even the strongest magic there is.
