The others would probably tease me mercilessly if they knew how much I read, and that I preferred romances to battle strategy or history or anything else, but this was my escape from the deep despair that still haunted me. This is how I experienced love and connection and passion now. Simple, pain-free, and always accessible, as long as I had light.
“Nothing quashes romance quite like murder.”
“Hope is never cruel,” she said, tilting her head to the side so that her green eyes, so similar to Ember’s, caught the firelight. “Life is cruel. But it is hope that makes it worth living.”
“Because he was a part of you,” he said simply, walking past me out of the room. “And I want to know every part.”
“But you’re not betraying him if you honor his memory,” he rumbled. “You will always grieve for him, Seline. No one expects you to give up your grief. But you don’t have to be a ghost forever.”
“If you want a single night of pleasure or a lifetime of my undying love, I will take whatever you want to give and thank the stars for the chance. And if all I ever have are these kisses,” he continued, squeezing my waist. “The ones I stole and this one you gave freely, then I’ll die a lucky male.”
