For the eldest daughters in my life I see you I appreciate you and most important I love you for who you are and not what you do for everyone
Maybe she’s not used to hearing compliments. Although that seems unlikely, because she’s beautiful.
“I never talk about you, Kris.” Henry shrugs in the nonchalant way he does. “It’s only important that she remembers my name.”
“How about we rock-paper-scissors for it?” she suggests, holding out her fist. “I win we watch How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days, but if you win, we watch JJ’s mom’s suggestion and we both pretend that I’m not crying the entire time. Ready?”
“Important question. Whose name was on your jersey?” “It doesn’t have a name. It wasn’t actually mine, I borrowed it from Ava.” The car pulls up to the curb and I hold the door open for her to climb in. “Yeah, we’re fixing that on Monday.”
“I always want to and I always will, but I have to be honest, sometimes I don’t know I should. I need you to talk to me if you feel like I’m not stepping up, because I will. I’ll do anything for you, Halle. I just don’t always know it because sometimes that isn’t how I think. I get wrapped
up in things and then I don’t focus on the outside things I want to focus on. You are a high priority to me.”
She looks so happy it makes me ache.
“You’re being very quiet,” she whispers. “It’s my brand.” “What’re you daydreaming about?” You. Always you.
She starts laughing, and it’s the only sound I’d choose over quiet.
She looks so beautiful; I wish I could capture her right now, but even with a paintbrush or pencil in my hand, I fear I wouldn’t do her justice. I wonder if she’d believe me if I told her.
“Henry,” she says quietly in the only way I want to hear her say my name from now on. I cup her cheek and her free hand covers mine.
“I’d tell you how fucking beautiful you are. That when you laugh I want to listen to it forever. I’d tell you that when I daydream, I think of us. And all the things I want us to do. And all the things I want to do to you.”
She looks so pretty. And happy. That’s my favorite part.
“You’re my perfect canvas, Halle. Every part of you.
“You are the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen in my life.” “I think that about you every day.”
“I hadn’t even thought about that. I don’t think a symptom of pregnancy is looking like you’re on the brink of death.” “You clearly haven’t seen Breaking Dawn.” “You think I lived with Anastasia and Lola and didn’t have to watch Breaking Dawn? Be serious.
He frowns. “At least put it in a nest or something.”
“I love him! Is that clear enough for you?”
“Henry is my best friend and I fell in love with him when I wasn’t supposed to and now I need to check that he’s okay.”
This might be my favorite romance book, but we’re my favorite love story. Yours always, Henry
