It was the hypocrisy. In school, I’d learn all about American history—or, as someone like Howard Zinn might point out, a whitewashed version of it—with its nods to high-minded ideals like liberty and justice for all. I’d watch the news and hear then president Ronald Reagan project a vision of America as this proverbial city on a hill, a beacon for democracy and human rights across the globe. So how could the country that helped liberate the Nazi concentration camps refuse to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide that preceded it?
