Certainly, most parents want safety and financial security for their kids. But I think the lawsuit laid bare that that kind of safety and financial security is a mirage. It can be taken away just like that. It was for us. People often run toward what they imagine is pragmatic because it all seems so tangible—a good job, a steady income, a 401(k), health benefits. But when you’ve seen all that disappear, you realize those things are more ephemeral than they seem. They have no meaning beyond their economic worth.
