And now Rosie fucking Belmont has waltzed into the scene with her smart mouth and suspiciously watery eyes. And all I want to do is demand to know who hurt her so I can fix it.
“Rosalie, when have I ever said no to you?” And I just stand here, stunned. I need a ride home from this party. I want to be alone. I need a job. Because try as I might, no matter how big of a dick he’s been, I can’t come up with a single instance of Ford ever telling me anything other than okay.
“That journal entry is fascinating, but all wrong. I was at home when you called that night. And I broke every speed limit to get to you.”
Because Rosie might think she knows what our secret is, but mine is that I loved sitting on that dock with her even back then.
I don’t know how long we stand here while Ford lets me fall apart in his arms. Taking all my anguish so I don’t need to carry it around myself.
“No one should ever have made you feel like it’s your job to rise above this. You’re allowed to process however you need to, Rosie. But me? I’m going to ruin them.”
“Rosie, shut up because I’m going to kiss you right now unless you tell me not to.” I love that she doesn’t go all soft on me. Our gazes latch onto to one another. She tips her chin up. And for once she doesn’t say a fucking word.
“You’re one of the good ones, Ford Grant Junior. Keep the key.”
“I’m never going to get over wanting to fuck you. And something tells me you won’t care what I call you when I do.”
“I definitely don’t hate you, Rosie. Not even close. But I can fuck you like I do if that’s what you need.”
“That was mean, Rosie. And no. You’re stuck with me. Give me all that bitchy attitude. It just makes me love you more.”
“No, Rosie. I want you up here.” His voice is soft and deep as he reaches for me. Broad hands circle my waist and I squeal as he hauls me on to him, so I’m straddling his torso. “Gonna need you to be quiet, baby,” he murmurs as his palms slide up over my quads, tips of his fingers dipping inside my underwear at my hips.
“Now you’re going to hold on tight to that headboard, sit on my face, and try to keep your mouth shut while I make you come.”
“I feel like a princess,” I murmur, watching the setting sun over the peaks of Emerald Lake. “You are one.”
“You are worth every fucking penny!” he shouts, arms flung wide. “I’m careful with my money. I’m downright philanthropic. But this? This isn’t a game. I’m in love with you. This is pocket change compared to what I’d be happy to spend on you. There is no price too high to watch this asshole pay for every moment of misery and self-doubt he caused you.”
“Hear this, Rosie. You are worth every penny. Every fortune. Every investment. Every risk. You are priceless to me.”
“I left all safe bets behind, Ford. I don’t want a safe relationship. I don’t want a safe love.” His eyes dance between mine, and I forge ahead. “I want messy and snarky and…” I peek back over my shoulder at the old barn, transformed into a new office, before turning my gaze back on him. “I want a wild love. I want you, even though you make me want to push you into the lake and break your computer and throw paint all over your pristine floors. I want this feeling I have with you where it hurts to breathe when you get too far away, where my skin itches uncontrollably when you look at me. Where

“So I’m going to be mad at you for a few more hours. And then we’re going to carry on. I’m going to be chaotic, and you’re going to be meticulous. I’m going to drive you up the wall and you’re going to insult me in that way that feels nothing like an insult and everything like saying I love you. And we’re going to do this thing together.” I cup his cheeks and give his head a little shake. “Because who the hell else would put up with me?” Then he drops his head to my chest and murmurs, “Putting up with you is my favorite thing to do.”
